Lions outslugged by LaPorte
BREMEN — The Varsity Lions hosted LaPorte on Monday afternoon, and the teams combined for an offensive clinic on a day when the wind was howling out. The Slicers put up four separate three-run innings and kept Bremen at bay throughout the contest. The Lions attempted a comeback in the late innings, putting up six runs over the final two frames, but ultimately fell by a final of 12-8. The teams combined for 42 hits, walks, and HBP in the high-scoring affair.
LaPorte opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second, two of which came on a home run. The Lions got two back in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from 2B Jace Pippenger, scoring Cencelewski & Alvarado. LaPorte ripped another two-run home run in the top of the fourth, followed by an RBI single, pushing their lead to 6-2.
That score held until the top of the sixth, when a third Slicer home run made it 7-2. They tacked on two more with RBI doubles. Bremen narrowed the margin to 9-6 in the bottom half on two-run hits from SS Aiden Alvarado and 3B Max Barnes. As was the trend, LaPorte put up three more in the top of the 7th to get the game back to 12-6.
Bremen attempted one last push in the bottom half, scoring two more and cutting the deficit to four. They couldn’t sustain the rally, however, striking out twice to end the contest. The Lions will look to get back in the win column Tuesday at home against Triton – 5 pm start.
