Plymouth doubles team falls at Regional
INDIANAPOLIS — The Plymouth #1 Doubles Team of Seniors Nick Manzuk and Owen Walleske travelled to Indianapolis Saturday to play in the Individual Doubles Regional at North Central High School, falling to the undefeated #1 Doubles Team from LaPorte High School.
Overall, Nick and Owen started well. The first set found the two teams in a 2-2 deadlock, with LaPorte then taking a 4-2 lead with the first break of serve in the match. Plymouth, however, would respond and break right back to get the match to 3-4 and back on serve.
LaPorte would then break serve again and then hold serve to take the competitive first set 6-3. Plymouth would lose some momentum in the second set and eventually fall 6-0 to account for the 6-3, 6-0 final.
With the win, LaPorte moved its season record to 24-0, but would lose in the afternoon session Saturday in a close two-set match to Zionsville, one of the favorites to take the State Doubles Title this season.
With the loss, Nick and Owen finished the season 7-15 together at 1D, but ended the season well, winning 4 of their final 6 matches, including an Individual Doubles Sectional Championship.
“It’s always exciting to have kids playing this deep into the season and playing these extra matches,” said Plymouth coach Brad Haeck. “We held our own at the beginning of the match. We served and returned well early and gave ourselves a chance. We lost some momentum at the end of the first set, and that carried over to the second set. LaPorte has a legit All-State caliber doubles team, and we hung in there with them for quite a while. Nick and Owen and their families have some great memories from the last couple of weeks, and they can be proud of how well they improved and played down the stretch.”
