Chargers fall twice

DONALDSON — In what can best be described as challenging, the Marian University Ancilla Men’s Basketball team loaded up its non-conference schedule this year, and they have already seen a couple of extremely strong programs. Last Wednesday, the Chargers took on NJCAA Division II #14 South Suburban in South Holland, Illinois, and then Saturday afternoon, they traveled to play the Morton College Panthers in Cicero, Illinois. Unfortunately for the Chargers, they dropped both contests, falling to 0-4 early this season. Below is a quick look at some notes from each game.
#14 South Suburban (L 103-65): The Chargers came out aggressive, made shots early, and took care of the ball, heading into the locker room at halftime with a chance, down just 40-33. But an offensive explosion and a massive rebounding advantage (48-17) helped the Bulldogs secure a comfortable 103-65 decision. Freshman guard Shawn Donaldson topped the Chargers with 17 points on 6-12 shooting, plus he added 4 assists and 4 steals…both team highs. Freshman guard Omari Evans (12 points) and Sophomore guard Kenneth Grant (10 points) also reached double figures in scoring.
Morton (L 78-62): In this one, Marian Ancilla did a really nice job of taking care of the basketball, turning it over just 11 times. But a 59-30 rebounding advantage that went to the Panthers spoke volumes, as Morton produced five more opportunities to get shots following offensive rebounds. Kenneth Grant led the way for the Chargers in this one, scoring 21 points on 9-14 shooting, including 3-7 from deep. Freshman wing Kayden English added 17 points of his own, while Shawn Donaldson collected a team-leading 7 caroms in the loss.
The Men’s Basketball team now heads to St. Clair County Community College for the Thumb Coast Tipoff Classic this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 20th, 21st, and 22nd.
