Chargers Score Often but Fall Twice to Glen Oaks
CENTREVILLE (MI) – Friday afternoon, the Marian University Ancilla Baseball team traveled to Glen Oaks Community College to take on the Vikings in a doubleheader. In game-1, the Chargers secured a 6-3 lead in the top of the 7th inning but fell 7-6 after a Viking rally in the bottom of the frame. In game 2, Glen Oaks scored 9 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and never looked back, winning 19-10. Below are some notes/highlights from each of Friday’s games.
GAME-1 (L 7-6): Through 6 innings, the Chargers trailed 3-1, and there wasn’t a lot of action. But the 7th inning proved to be huge for both teams. When Marian Ancilla batted in the top of the 7th, they walked twice before Freshman Kelton Weaver hit a 2-run double, tying the game at 3-3. Sophomore Logan Clark singled, then Freshman Devon Ortiz grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Weaver was able to score, giving the Chargers the 4-3 lead. 3 pitches later, Redshirt Freshman Owen Negron belted a 2-run home run over the left field fence, and the navy & gold were ahead 6-3.
Unfortunately for the Chargers, Glen Oaks responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, and Marian Ancilla lost a heartbreaker. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th, and the Chargers leading 6-3, the Vikings drove in a run with a single, they drove in another run with another single, then, trailing 6-5, they tripled home the final 2 runs to knock off MUAC, 7-6.
Sophomore starting pitcher Kaleb Short pitched a strong 5 innings, allowing just 1 earned run and striking out 4 batters. Sophomore Jaxson Hixson had an odd day, reaching base safely 3 times, all 3 by way of the walk. And Redshirt Freshman Javier Higham added a stolen base to his tally.
GAME-2 (L 19-10): Glen Oaks jumped out to a 9-0 lead after 1 inning of play, and it was tough for the Chargers to battle back. Still, though, trailing 12-2 after 4 innings, they did manage 4 runs in the top of the 5th, and 4 more runs in the top of the 6th inning.
Freshman Armando Arroyo had a pair of singles, drove in 2 runs, and scored twice himself. Redshirt Freshman Owen Negron continued a strong day with a single, a double, 2 runs driven in, and a run scored. Freshmen Cade Quick (2 RBIs), Liam Dupuis-Cundy (1 RBI), and Michael Fry (1 RBI) all drove in runs.
The Chargers are back in action this Thursday (4/23) when they head to Kellogg Community College for a double-header against the Bruins. Game times are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.. They then return home and play games on Friday (4/24) and Saturday (4/25).
