LaVille’s DeWitt Slicing Through Foes’ D With Ease

Imagine rushing for 252 yards on 19 carries and four touchdowns in one half … in a high school game.

Impossible.

Try again.

That’s exactly what LaVille senior running back Paul DeWitt did in the opening round of sectional play last Friday night in his team’s thorough destruction of Whiting.

Think about that for a second.

In a 24-minute half, DeWitt gained 252 yards. You do the math.

That’s nothing short of amazing is it?

With that in mind, what DeWitt did to the Oilers is nothing new.

It seems like the 5-foot-9, 195-pound senior running back has been doing that to opponents for eternity.

In particular, he’s been doing it this year.

DeWitt has hit the century mark eight times in second-ranked LaVille’s 10 wins this season,

And get this …he’s amassed 1,448 yds rushing (good for a top 25 ranking in the state of Indiana amongst all rushers) – that’s 144.8 yds per game. Plus, DeWitt has 23 rushing TDs this fall.

He would be the first to tell you that his o-line deserves all the credit. After all, the big uglies up front are the ones who have paved the way for such eyebrow-raising production. He’s right, too. LaVille’s line is good, damn good, and damn physical. They have created large running lanes, but DeWitt is a monster on the gridiron, a battering ram if you will. Rarely does he go down on first contact. In fact, it’s his style to break tackle after tackle and he’s been known to drag would-be tacklers for yard after yard and even into the end zone …that is if he doesn’t bulldoze them.

If DeWitt isn’t first-team all-state, it will be a crime of epic proportion.

He’s a very special player on a very special team.

Tonight DeWitt and his Lancers hope to continue their magical season as they host No. 3 and defending state champion Andrean, the team that handed LaVille its last loss, ending the Lancers’ 2021 season in regionals.

The MAX 98.3 FM sports team has gotten the good fortune of covering a majority of No. 33’s games this season. Each and every time we do, we usually leave the press box shaking our heads, somewhat in awe of yet another one of his stellar performances.

No doubt the Lancers will need DeWitt to play at the top of his game tonight if they are to survive and advance.

And if you ask me, expect DeWitt to will his team to victory and open even more eyes around the state this evening, just as he’s done during this magical 2022 Lancer season.
