Grace Baptist volleyball brings home state title

This past weekend won’t soon be forgotten by Grace Baptist Church and Christian School.

Why?

Simple. Their volleyball team won the Indiana Association of Christian Schools state championship in Muncie.

The team, made up of students in eighth grade through their senior year of high school, navigated through an eight-team bracket to capture the state crown.

Head coach Anna Nichols says coaching this particular group of girls was a joy.

“They’re super fun to coach,” she said. “They’re real easy. They care a lot about what they are doing, which makes it easier for the coaches.

“They’re just a great group of girls. They have great attitudes.”

The Grace Lions put the finishing touches on what was a magical season in central Indiana after playing a 13-match regular season, which started in August.

“It was a special season,” senior Bethany Truitt said.

Bethany was one of the team’s six members.

Other members included Kaylee Falk, Madison Orr, Audrey Orr, Meghan Falk and Izzy Hayn.

The entire team, including assistant coach Wanda Falk, appeared on MAX 98.3 FM WYMR’s Marshall County Today Show with Tony Ross on Tuesday.

One of the keys this season, according to its coach, was the team’s positive mindset.

“We made a big deal about encouraging each other during games because that can make a difference,” she said.

No doubt the team’s chemistry set the table for a successful campaign.

“If you made a mistake, our team would pat you on the back, which was really encouraging,” Izzy said. “It was encouraging to have a team that doesn’t put you down.”

“I really enjoyed this season,” Kaylee said. “We grew physically together running a lot, but also grew spiritually.”

Oh yes, this group has a strong belief in a higher power.

“We just don’t want to win, we want to win for God,” Izzy said.

And perhaps there was some divine intervention involved in the Lions’ road to the title.

“We were playing a little below our level in the game before the championship (against Valparaiso),” Anna explained. “The last set was really intense, but we pulled out the win. It was really terrifying. They never gave up and they were really pumped.”

So hats off to Grace Baptist and its volleyball team for its perseverance and making a memory that won’t soon be forgotten!
