Lansing outslugs Chargers

LANSING — Sunday, the Marian University Ancilla Softball team returned to the field for the first time in over a week, following multiple postponements due to severe weather. Unfortunately, they returned to face the MCCAA Western Division-leading Lansing Stars. The Stars have won the division each of the last two years and are well enough in front to likely make it a third year in a row. Lansing won both contests, 15-0 (in 5 innings) and 15-3.
GAME-1 (Lansing 15, MUAC 0): The Stars had two big offensive innings, scoring 5 runs in the top of the 2nd and 8 in the top of the 5th, but it was a strong pitching performance as their starting pitcher went all 5 innings, struck out 8, and allowed just 1 hit to the Chargers. Freshman Cayla Beasley had the lone single for Marian Ancilla. Sophomore starting pitcher Sofie Francis (0-1) was credited with the loss in the contest.
GAME-2 (Lansing 15, MUAC 3): Lansing scored 3 in the top of the 1st, 3 in the top of the 4th, and were out to an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th inning. The Chargers plated 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th, attempting to fight back, but the Stars responded with 7 more runs in the top of the final inning to close this one out, 15-3. Freshmen Morgan Fogle, Cayla Beasley, and Kimberly Cummings each had 2 hits in the second game, while Beasley drove in a run and Fogle hit a double. Cummings (4-6) started in the pitching circle and recorded all but 1 out, going 6 2/3 innings.
The Marian Ancilla Softball team is next scheduled to travel to Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
