Chargers open in Florida
DAVENPORT (FL) – The Marian University Ancilla Baseball team left for its annual trip to Florida Friday evening, and they began action Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against Jackson College (MI) at the Northeast Regional Park (aka NERP) in Davenport, Florida. The Chargers fell twice, 2-0 and 7-1 to the Jets, as they had just 6 hits spread across 14 innings of play. Below is a quick look at some highlights from each of the two games to start the Spring Break trip.
Game one (L 2-0): Sophomore Aiden Marcus, Sophomore Aayden Antoine, Freshman Cade Quick, and Sophomore Kaleb Short were the only Chargers who made it on base safely in this game. Marcus hit a 2-out single to center field, followed by Antoine reaching via a walk in the bottom of the 4th inning. Neither was able to advance past second base. In the bottom of the 5th, Quick reached due to an error to lead off the inning. With 1 out, Freshman Kelton Weaver pinch ran for Quick and stole second base, but he was stranded there. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Short was plunked by a pitch. He was later thrown out at second base attempting to advance on a fly ball.
Freshman pitcher Jaylan Yates (0-2) had another strong start with limited run support. Yates pitched 5 1/3 innings, he allowed just 3 hits and 1 earned run, and he struck out 5 batters. Sophomore Dylan Ford appeared in relief and didn’t allow a run in 1 2/3 innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and striking out 1.
Game two (L 7-1): Jackson won the beginning and end of this contest, while Marian Ancilla was stronger in between. The Jets jumped out in front with a 3-run bottom of the 1st, then they polished everything off with a 4-run bottom of the 6th inning. Sophomore Logan Clark had a pair of hits for the Chargers, including an RBI double to score fellow Sophomore Jose Paris in the top of the 3rd inning. Freshman Cade Quick added his own double, while Sophomores Kaleb Short and Aiden Marcus each had a single to account for the Chargers’ 5 hits in this one.
Starting pitcher Aiden Marcus (0-1) had a solid outing, contributing 5 1/3 innings of work. While he allowed 5 runs, only 2 were earned, and he struck out 7 batters during his time on the hill. Freshman Isaiah Vaca pitched to 7 total batters, striking out 2 for both of his recorded outs.
The Marian Ancilla Baseball team will continue its 7-game trip against Ridgewater College (MN) at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Florida.
