Plymouth’s Cantero honored with North/South appearance
PENDLETON — Plymouth 1S player Sophia Cantero was recently selected to the North All-Star Team for the Annual North/South All-Star Tennis Event sponsored by the ICGSA (Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association).
The event was played at the Community Sports and Wellness facility in Pendleton on Sunday. The day featured 13 girls representing both the North and the South teams. For the 2026 season, 17 of the 26 players in the event made the All-State Teams in either singles or doubles. Each player played three rounds of matches for the day. The first two rounds were set to 6, while the final round was played as a super tiebreaker to 10.
In the first round, Sophia paired up with Elaina Duthie from Northridge. Sophia and “Lainey” have played four matches against each other over the last two seasons as NLC opponents, but enjoyed teaming up on the court Sunday. Sophia and Elaina lost their set 6-1 to their opponents, Samantha Paberzs from Bishop Chatard (2nd Team All State Doubles) and Claire Clemmer-Becht from Providence.
In the second round, Sophia played singles against Caroline Allen from Mt. Vernon (Fortville). Allen was recently named to the First Team All-State Singles Team by the IHSTeCA. Sophia lost that set 6-1.
In the final round, Sophia paired up with Rowan Hinds from Delta. Sophia and Rowan lost their super tiebreaker 13-11 to their opponents, Allison McKinney from Sullivan (2nd Team All State Singles) and Kimber Doherty from Charlestown.
For the first two rounds of scoring, players earned 2 points for their team for a win and one point for their team if they scored at least 3 games in the set. For the final round for the super tiebreakers, players earned 2 points for their team for the win and earned one point if they scored at least 5 points in the super tiebreaker.
Overall, for the day, the South team defeated the North team 35-27.
Sophia represented Plymouth High School well in the event. Being selected to the team is a great recognition and highlight to an outstanding Plymouth Tennis career.
Sophia finished the 2026 Girls Tennis Season with an overall record of 12-7 playing #1 Singles for Plymouth and finished with the best #1 Singles season record for the Pilgrims since 2022. Plymouth coach Brad Haeck was also selected to coach the North All-Star Team on Sunday.
