Lady Jays Get Road Win At 4A Portage

North Judson Improves to 4-0

It was an extremely entertaining night as the North Judson San-Pierre Lady Bluejays (4-0) went on the road to one of the biggest schools in the State of Indiana, Portage High School, to take on the Lady Indians (2-1).

The Lady Jays were able to take an early lead in the ball game, capturing a 14-10 edge at the end of the first quarter, with Junior guard Lilly Frasure scoring eleven of the team’s fourteen first quarter points. With Portage realizing what they were up against with the explosive Junior, the Lady Indians put more of an emphasis on stopping #32, and held Frasure to just four points in the second quarter. However, the Lady Indians were not prepared for the scoring output of Junior Abby Chambers, who took advantage of the defense paying such close attention to Frasure, and scored seven of her ten points in that second quarter. The seven points from Chambers accounted for more than half of the scoring production by the Lady Jays in the second quarter, giving North Judson a 27-20 lead at the half.

The third quarter would see the two teams play an even game on the scoreboard, as both the Bluejays and the Indians put up fifteen points. The Lady Jays would once again be paced in the scoring category by Frasure, who accounted for seven of her game-high twenty-eight points in that third quarter, while Taytum Torress of Portage would put up six of her eight points in the game.

As the fourth quarter rolled around, it felt like the Lady ‘Jays would be able to walk away comfortably with their fifth win of the season. The Lady Indians, however, would start to turn up the defensive heat in the final quarter. Applying full court pressure through much of the fourth quarter, the Lady Indians would get multiple steals from both Jordan Barnes as well as Jaedyn Lowe, who each ended the game with four steals apiece. In the end, it was too little, too late for Portage. While they were able to outscore the Lady Jays 18-14 in the final stanza, it would not be enough, and the Jays would walk out of Portage High School with a 56-53 win, keeping their record unblemished at 4-0.

The Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game went to Lilly Frasure of North Judson, who scored a game high 28 points, which included 15 points in the first half and 13 in the second. Frasure was also able to pull down a game-high 13 rebounds, and snag a game-high 5 steals in helping lead her team to the 56-53 victory over the previously undefeated 4A opponent.

Head Coach Chris Newbauer and the Lady Jays will have a day off on Monday before jumping right back into the fire, as they will play host to the Argos Lady Dragons (3-1) who suffered their first loss of the season on Friday to Winamac 40-36.
