Bremen gets tennis win over Plymouth

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Girls Tennis Team hosted Bremen in Centennial Park on Monday for a Smash Cancer Match with the Lions, falling by a close 3-2 final score.
Before the match, the teams held a short ceremony where they discussed the purpose of the match, explained the cancer colors, thanked their sponsors, honored two local tennis community members/families who have recently been affected by cancer (Madison Golba, Mandy Metsker), and held honorary first serves.
Once the matches started, it was a tightly contested matchup that could have gone either way. Plymouth 1S player Sophia Cantero lost her match in straight sets, but the Plymouth 1D duo of Marisa Langfeldt and Lydia Wray won their match in straight sets to even the team score at 1-1. Shortly after, the Pilgrim 2D duo of Hanley Feldman and Elly Kruyer won two tight sets 6-4, 6-4 to give the Pilgrims a 2-1 lead.
About that time, Plymouth 2S player Mia Hartley had just won a tight first set 7-6(4), and Allison Grobe had regrouped (after losing the first set), to take a big second set lead. It seemed like things were trending Plymouth’s way.
After the split set break at 3S, Allison lost some momentum to start, fell behind 3-0 and ultimately lost 6-3 to even the team match at 2-2. Mia won the first game of her final set, but fell 6-1 to complete the 3-2 Bremen team win. Mia’s match lasted about three hours.
“I thought those final two matches were trending in the right direction, but we lost some momentum early in a few sets that were hard to overcome,” said Plymouth coach Brad Haeck. “Bremen has a nice singles lineup. Their 2 and 3 singles players really stepped up their games at key times. We battled, but came up a little short. Thankfully, we get another chance to play against another really good team tomorrow, and hopefully we can respond well.”
Plymouth Varsity/JV will host Goshen on Tuesday, 5/5/26, 5:30 PM start.
